General Notes: Husband - William Scholey

William & Mary have a large gravestone, laid flat, in the near left corner of East Ardsley churchyard after you enter the main gate. Gravestone Inscription. Sacred to the memory of William Scholey, the youngest son of Samuel and Hannah Scholey of Woodhouse Lane in this parish who departed this life on the 23 rd of December 1844 in the 48th year of his age. In all relations of private life his character was preserved. He was a tender and indulgent husband, an affectionate father and a sincere friend. He fell a victim to Typhus Fever having survived his daughter Mary the short space of 17 days. He was an industrious, active and intelligent assistant overseer of this parish during the period of 17 years and he filled that office to within 5 weeks and 3 days of his death. Also, Mary, widow of the said William Scholey who departed this life on the 20th day of January 1868 aged 65 yearsAn adjacent stone reads: Beneath this stone by the side of their lamented father are interred two sons and one daughter of William and Mary Scholey of Woodhouse Lane in this parish, namely William Scholey, who departed this life on the 21st day of December 1842 aged 13 years. Also, Thomas Scholey their second son who departed this life on the 13th day of May aged 4 years. Also, Mary Scholey their 3rd daughter who departed this life on the 8th day of December 1844 aged 8 years. Also one daughter who died in infancy.Forgive dear Lord the arbitory tears Our fond affections would have kept them here. Their winning sweetness often did employ their father's pleasure and their mother's joy. Still, should we wish in such a world as this to keep their spirits from immortal bliss. Ah, no great God, we calmly now resign them back to be forever thine. (P.S.S.)
