Gravestone inscription reads:IN LOVING MEMORY OFWILLIAM JOHNTHE BELOVED HUSBAND OFFLORENCE SCHOLEYWHO DIED MARCH 9th 1940AGED 76 YEARS"AT REST"ALSO OF THE ABOVEFLORENCE,WHO DIED MAY 21st 1959,AGED 85 YEARSTranscript of Obituary:Pontefract & Castleford Express March 14, 1940Death of Mr W.J. Scholey of Beal. The death on Saturday, after a short illness, of Mr W.J.Scholey, farmer and butcher of, "The Hollies", Beal, ended a long and useful career, and removed a prominent figure from the farming community of the district. Mr Scholey occupied a unique place in the village of Beal. He went to the village as a boy, 63 years ago, to become apprenticed to his uncle, the late Mr Joseph Scholey, butcher, who formerly occupied "The Hollies". Mr Scholey went through the hard school of his trade, and finally took over his uncle's business and house, in which he had lived during his uncle's lifetime, Thereafter, while maintaining the butchering business, he turned his attention to farming, and about 1906, took over Village Farm, Beal. In due course he undertook some of the communal responsibilities of his trade in the work of the Pontefract Butchers' Association, and in the last war and the present one became an allocator for the butchers of the Knottingley and Pontefract rural district under the food control scheme. He was also a member of the Pontefract branch of the National Farmers' Union, and for many years helped to direct village affairs through the Beal Parish Council, of which he was at one time the chairman. Throughout the period he paid strict attention to religion, and for forty years until his death he was a churchwarden at Birkin Parish Church, which has suffered a very great loss by his death. In the words of the Rector (the Rev. S.B. Baron) he was often in church when his age and health gave him a valid excuse for absence. The church was a very large part of his life and its influence extended to his family. A son, Mr W. Scholey is treasurer of the church, and a daughter-in-law is the secretary of the Parochial Church Council. Mr Scholey was 76 years old, and leaves a widow, four sons and five daughters. Two sons, Messrs. H.J. and G. Scholey, carry on the butchery business, and a third, Mr W.R. Scholey farmed in partnership with his father. Many villagers gathered at the funeral service at the Kellington Parish Church, on Tuesday, as well as friends and farming colleagues throughout the district. The service was conducted by the Rector of Birkin and the vicar of Kellington (the Rev. T. Woods) and the congregation sang the hymn "We love the place, O God" Mr H.T.B.Worfolk, of Knottingley, was the organist. Mr Scholey was buried in a vaulted grave in the Kellington Churchyard, and the grave was lined with evergreens and flowers. Three employees, Messrs. J.Lee, Charles and Clifford Emmerson, with Mr C.Thompson, acted as bearers. The chief mourners were: - The widow, Mr and Mrs W.R. Scholey, Mr and Mrs J.
