Extract from Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald. Saturday 28 June 1902.A Youthful Pilferer. Staveley Lad Sentenced To Be Birched. At the Chesterfield County Police Court, on Saturday, Walter Watson (12) was charged with attempting to steal three duck eggs, value 4d, the property of George Siddall, at Staveley, on the 10th inst. George Siddall, of Barrow Hill, stated that he had been missing duck eggs, and consequence had set his son Joseph to watch. Witness aiso reported the matter to the police. Joseph Siddall, son of the last witness, said that on the day named he saw the defendant go into the duck cote. Defendant had broken the door open. Witness tried to fasten the defendant in the cote. When the defendant was caught by a man named Wallace he had no eggs in his possesion. Robert Wallace said that he saw the defendant come out of the duck cote. P.C. Dennis said that the defendant when charged, admitted taking the eggs and forcing the door of the cote. Inspector Birley stated that on November 23rd last he received a complaint against the defendant for stealing some toffee and butter scotch from a confectioner at Staveley, but the confectioner would not prosecute. The police had had several complaints about this boy. The Chairman: You will have six strokes of the birch rod, and I hope it will teach you to do better.
