General Notes: Husband - Henry Burgess
After leaving St. Andrew's School, Henry went to Wigan Technical College where he learnt engineering and technical drawing. His father Charles had decided that he was going to join him in his painting and decorating business which Henry baulked at, so Henry applied for and got a position as a draughtsman at the company Walkers Engineering nearby; however, his father heard of this and went to Walkers to tell them that his son would not be joining them as he was going to work for him.Henry worked for his father until shortly before the war started in 1939, when he applied for a position in the Police in Bolton. He was working as a policeman when the war started so enlisted for the RAF at Warrington, where he was placed in the Service Police.After leaving Morecambe, Henry was posted to Easington, Yorkshire in charge of security at a radar station there, after Easington he was posted to a number of radar stations along the east coast including Cromer where there were nightly air raids. For his demobilisation, he was posted to RAF Valley on Anglesey in charge of security, where he benefitted from the availability of the food in the US shop. He always brought plenty of food home on leave; cans of ham and fruit, fresh eggs etc. which were in very short supply in England at the time.

\ul \b Mary's Eulogy\ulnone \b0 Always a Yorkshire girl at heart, Mary was born at Linden Cottage in Adwick le Street, Yorkshire, where she lived with her parents and maternal Lee grandparents until her mother became pregnant with sister Nancie. After living in Askern for a little while the family decided that the house wasn't big enough so they all moved into the Old Vicarage at Skelbrooke, Yorkshire which had about 10 acres of land, a tennis court, croquet lawn, pond and woods for shooting. Mary had the time of her life there, wearing trousers, climbing trees and getting into trouble; driving her father's bull-nosed Morris Cowley down the drive with her father chasing her or taking the milk-cow Molly to the bull down the lane with her grandfather chasing her.They all lived there for a while until about 1930 when her grandfather Thomas Lee had the house "Arncliffe" built for them at Five Lane Ends, Skellow which was closer to the Green Lane School where her aunt Ethel Brears taught. She said she had more coats than she knew what to do with whilst she was at Green Lane School, her aunt used to take her to the local fairs and usually bought her a coat.Another memory of Mary was when she was in one of the carriages on the first test run of The Flying Scotsman whilst her uncle Edward Brears was in the engine cabin; her uncle "Ebby" had put her in the carriage and told her to stay there and behave; Edward being one of the senior draughtsmen under Sir Nigel Gresley. Edward and his wife, Sir Nigel and Mary's parents and Lee grandparents had dinner that evening in Mary's home Arncliffe at Skellow. She was packed off to bed early after the dinner so she doesn't know what went on after that.After Arncliffe, the family moved to Morecambe where they bought a boarding house, Mary used to love horse-riding on the beach there; she used to love the outdoors, her aunt used to take her up to the Lake District and she used to walk on the Yorkshire moors on our holidays. Earlier this year, she did a 3 or 4 mile walk along Morecambe prom, leaving everyone else struggling to keep up with her.As was her father Rowland and grand-uncle William Poskitt Brears before, Mary was an accomplished organist and pianist. She learnt the organ at St Barnabas' Church in Morecambe, being taught by Miss Brasha Lancaster. Mary had passed all her exams for the London College of Music and played for the church occasionally when asked. She also studied for her Fellowship of The Royal College of Organists and was ready to take her final exams, however, due to it being wartime, this was not to be. Her fiance Henry Burgess, then a corporal in the RAF proposed to her and she married.When her husband Henry died, Roy Taylor, the organist and choirmaster asked her to help out and play the organ on Sundays at St Andrew's Church in Wigan, which she did for a while. During WW2, Mary was working as a clerk in the Clarendon Hotel, Morecambe along with her good friend, Thora Hird, Thora's nickname for Mary was "Breezy" because every time Mary used to walk past Thora's desk, her papers would be blown on to the floor. On the night of her honeymoon, Thora hung an old paraffin red road warning light outside the door of number 110.Also, during the war, one of the postings for her husband was a radar station at Easington in Yorkshire; one event she remembered in particular was the sound of a motorcycle close by which suddenly stopped, Henry ran across the room, grabbed Mary and dove under the kitchen table. A loud explosion followed outside; when the pair of them appeared from under the table, the windows and door were blown in, plaster had fallen from the ceiling and there was a hole in the field outside the house. The sound of the motor cycle engine stopping had been the sound of a V1 rocket engine cutting out.Although Mary wasn't exactly famous for her housekeeping prowess, she was a good cook and her Yorkshire puddings and Bakewell tarts were to die for, she got the recipe for the Bakewell tarts from her grandfather Lee, he got it whilst he was a pupil at Bakewell Grammar School. She even made her own cottage cheese.Mary was always a very private person and lived alone after her husband died, she took all the hard knocks without complaining, although her recent loss of short term memory did wear her down, before that, she was very fond of reading and crosswords. Although she didn't socialise, she wasn't anti-social, she had a great and often very dry sense of humour and could be very laconic. When she was in hospital or in the care home in her last few months, the staff never had a bad word to say about her and called her "a lovely lady".She was never too busy to listen and was always a caring and loving mother to her children, she always placed their problems before her own and she will be very deeply missed by them and her grandchildren; she had a special soft spot for her son-in-law Rowland and daughter-in-law Beryl. It was a privilege to know her.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Brears
Mary was born at Linden Cottage in Adwick le Street, Yorkshire, where she lived with her parents and maternal grandparents until her mother became pregnant with Nancie. Sometime during the pregnancy, her grandfather Thomas Lee, a stonemason/employer had a house built in Askern, Yorkshire for the family and they all moved there. Some time after that, Thomas Lee decided that the house wasn't big enough so they all moved into the Old Vicarage at Skelbrooke, Yorkshire which had about 10 acres of land, a tennis court, croquet lawn, pond and woods for shooting. They all lived there for a while until about 1930 when Thomas Lee had the house "Arncliffe" built for them at Five Lane Ends, Skellow which was closer to the Green Lane School where her aunt Etheline Brears taught.As her father Rowland and grand-uncle William Poskitt Brears before, Mary is an accomplished organist and pianist. Occasionally she would retrieve some classical sheet music from the piano seat and play some complex fugue, keeping her hand in as she said. I remember some of this sheet music being almost covered with black music notes.I remember on one occasion when I was in the church choir at St. Andrews in Wigan, I had been told to go home early from choir practice for misbehaving. I said something to the choirmaster, who was also the church organist, along the lines that my mother was a better organist than him, and my father could sing better than anyone in the choir, which he didn't believe and sent me packing. On arriving home, I told my father this, he told my mother to get her coat and marched us up to the church. By this time, there was only the choirmaster in the church, my mother sat down at the organ and pulled out most of the stops and played "The Trumpet Voluntary" from memory and a couple of fugues. My father then stood up and sang "The Holy City" with my mother accompanying him. My father then grabbed me by the elbow and marched us all out of the church, the choirmaster standing there with his mouth open. I remember the choirmaster coming round to the house on a couple of occasions pleading with my mother to play the church organ at services and asking my father to join the choir.When her husband Henry died, Roy Turner, the organist and choirmaster asked her to help out and play the organ on Sundays at St Andrew's Church in Wigan, which she did. Edward and his wife, Sir Nigel and Mary's parents and Lee grandparents had dinner that evening in Mary's home Arncliffe at Skellow. She was packed off to bed early after the dinner so she doesn't know what went on after that.[JDB]
