The Gervas Turr Family History (c1974)Mr. and Mrs. Gervas Turr Sr. came to Canada from Yorkshire, England in 1888 with their daughter and son in law S.J.W.Taylor. They settled in the Clumber District close to another daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brears who had come out west in 1882. A third daughter, Mrs. Wm. Golland and her husband also lived in the Clumber area. There were also two sons, Robert and William, who married and made their home in the district. Robert married Leah Leppington and William married Flo Hicks. After some years on their farms, both families retired, Robert to BC and William to Bredenbury. Mr. and Mrs. William Turr had one son, who, with his wife Ann, farmed on his father's farm until moving to Yorkton. The farm was sold to Donald Taylor, grandson of S.J.W.Taylor.In their later years Mr. and Mrs. Gervas Turr Sr. made their home with the S.J.W.Taylors until they passed away.

The Pontefract & Castleford ExpressOctober 3rd, 1891Beal. Fire, A barn burnt downConsiderable commotion was caused at Beal shortly after noon on Monday on it being discovered that a large barn on the premises of Mr. John Brears was on fire. The fire was in a large, two storey building some 18 yards long, and was stocked with some 60 quarters of barley etc. Two of the farm servants were first at the fire at about 1-40 and a messenger was at once despatched for the Pontefract fire engine and brigade. Mr & Mrs Jackson of the King's Head Inn closed their licensed house and shop to go and render assistance at the fire, and a number of women also gave very material aid, though the weight of water that could be brought to bear with buckets could not possibly extinguish the fire, yet, this aid was the means of subduing the flames that burst from the side of the barn adjacent to the stackyard till the arrival of the Pontefract Steam Fire Engine, a little before 3 o' clock. It should not be omitted to mention that P.C. Blake was at the scene of the conflagration in good time and that great credit was due to the many willing helpers for the services rendered prior to the arrival of the fire brigade. The telegram summoning the brigade arrived at Pontefract shortly before a quarter past two. The fire bells were rung and the horses harnessed to the engine and the hose wagon from Mr Riddings, Elephant Hotel stables, the brigade being ready for moving before several of Captain Barker's men had answered the summons of the fire bells. The engine fire was lighted on the way to Beal, and within ten minutes of the arrival was hard at work pumping water from a pond about 180 yards away from the fire. The flames had got such hold of the building that that it was beyond hope to save anything. The floor dividing the two storeys and the roof of the place soon fell in and the whole was a heap of burning mess, the heat coming from it being considerable. Everything was rendered safe by about 10 o'clock when the engine and brigade returned home. Fortunately, the whole of the damage (which is estimated at £250) is insured, part in the Yorkshire Insurance Company and part in the Palatine. The cause of the fire is unknown. Mr Brears, the tenant of the farm, was at Pontefract at the time the telegram announcing the fire reached there. He is the overseer for the parish and had just been attending audit.

General Notes: Husband - John Brears
John sailed to New Zealand on the "Egmont", arriving Aukland 19 July 1860. On his arrival, he went to work on his uncle John Chambers' sheep farm at Te Mata, Hawkes Bay.[Patricia Ryan]"Egmont"The Southern Cross Friday 20th July 1860 pg2Entered Inwards - July 19 - Egmont, ship, 800 tons, Gibson, from London. Our old friend the "Egmont," Capt. Gibson, arrived on Wednesday in harbour, from England. She left Gravesend on the 5th April. Sighted San Batonio on the 13th, and crossed the line on the 15th May. Tristian D'Acunha was passed on the 1st, and the Merdian of the Cape on the 9th June, in lat. 46° 40. Her highest latitude whilst running down her Easting was 48 to the S. of the Cogets. On the 12th July off Doubtful Bay in the Southern Island. Shipped a heavy sea which swamped the between decks and had to lay to till damage was repaired. The 3 Kings were sighted on the 16th. The "Egmont" was near the Barrier on Tuesday evening., and was standing off and on between that and the Kawau during the night. We regret to here that one of the former, Mr David Richardson, aged 51, died on the 25th June. He was in a most precarious state when he joined the ship.
