General Notes: Husband - Albert Ashurst
Albert Ashurst was born in November 1925, the only child of John and Alice Ashurst. He was named Albert because one of his uncles, Albert Gwilliam was at the time thought to be dying of TB, his uncle recovered after Dad's christening.Dad's own father did not enjoy good health as a result of having been in the trenches during the first world war. When my dad was ten his father died and his mother remarried very quickly so dad acquired a step father and a step brother within just over a year of his fathers death. Dad was never very close to either although he maintained a polite relationship with both for his mothers sake. I don't recall seeing very much of my paternal grandma as I grew up and I never questioned why although I have since regretted not knowing her better. When my Dad left school he got an apprenticeship as an electrician and then when he was old enough to go to war he joined the air-force. He was sent overseas almost immediately his basic training was done so he and Mum decided to get married on his last leave before he was sent out to India. He did not like India at all, I imagine it must have been a bewildering place to an 18 year old who had never really been outside the Northwest of England. He found it a hot and dirty place full of flies and he thought Indian people lazy and untrustworthy, He never changed his mind about the Indian race or the country and had no desire to ever return. From India he went to an island called Cocas, off the coast of Australia where he was ground crew at an aircraft base. He liked it there, who wouldn't - sun sand and sea! He also got the chance to test drive the planes.Nine months and two weeks after the wedding I was born, but I didn't get to see Dad until I was two years three months old. At this time Mum and me where still living at 6 Kimberley Street with Grandma and Granddad Burgess; Dad moved in as well and we stayed there until after my sister Ruth was born. We moved into our own home at 2 Kimberley Street around 1949.In December 1947 Dad got his first job in Civvy Street - as an electrician in the pit, he hated being underground but luckily for him he did not need to put up with it for very long. At new year he was visited by his uncle Arthur (brother of Albert Gwilliam),Arthur was an engineer at Carrington & Dewhurst, Grove Mill Eccleston. He helped Dad get a job as an electrician at Douglas Mill Standish, Dad loved working there and he stayed there from January 1948 until he retired around 1987. He was a hard worker and did shift work until he was made foreman, riding to Standish and back on a push bike to save spending money on bus fares. When I was 17 he had saved enough for a deposit on a a brand new house ; no mean feat in those days and so he moved us to Coppull. For the first time we had a bathroom -absolute bliss - though Dad was always back of the queue for getting in there, being the only male in the family. He then decided to trade in his push bike for a car, initially a three wheeler Robin Reliant. Later on when he passed his driving test, a Ford Anglia. He loved his car it was his pride and joy and never paid out for a service; why should he when he so enjoyed doing it himself and he saved money which of course he also enjoyed. My Dad was a quiet man, a true gentleman and always smartly dressed, he very seldom raised his voice or lost his temper. He lived for his family. He loved listening to "Radio Luxembourg" when I was a kid he always seemed to have the wireless in pieces on the kitchen table trying to improve the reception. There where few radio channels then and this was the only one that played what I suppose was the fore runner of pop music it continually faded in and out and whistled but it did not stop my Dad trying . When I was kid I always thought my Dad could fix anything and the situation did not change when I was married I still thought my Dad could fix anything and I do not remember him ever letting me down.[Kath Brogan]
