Robert Thompson and Jessie Cromarty(Submitted by Doris Strachan nee Thompson c 1974)The Thompson family came to Canada in the year 1888 along with others from the Orkneys. I expect they had heard it was a land of promise with more chance of owning their own land.Alex and Jane Thompson had nine children born in Sanday, Orkney, one of them being Robert Stewart who came to Canada with his parents. They arrived in May 1888 at Langenberg, then travelled by foot and by ox cart to their homestead - SE1/4 18-23-1 west of the second.A school was built and named the Cut Arm School. It was not opened until May 15, 1889, when they finally obtained a teacher. Her name was Miss Fannie Grayham from Birtle, Manitoba. She was hired for the term of six months - at 40 dollars a month. Amongst the first pupils to attend were Robert, James and Jessie Thompson.Robert Thompson's first farm was east of Bredenbury - Section 14-33-2-W2nd.Jessie Ann Moar Cromarty who later became his wife, was also born in Sanday. She came to Canada in 1905 and stayed for some time with her brother James Cromarty and family in Winnipeg. Jessie worked for a while at Eatons in the cash department. Her sister, Bessie was married to Robert Muir. They lived on a farm east of Saltcoats. So in June 1907, Robert and Jessie were married by the minister H. Feir B.A.. Two children were born to them on the farm, Doris Jane and Annie Jean. Later they were blessed with two more daughters in Saltcoats, Jessie Laird and Elsie.Robert sold the farm to a cousin, John Norquay. We moved to Saltcoats where Dad took over the dray business as well as looking after the oil and gas tanks by the railroad. There were no trucks then so Dad, had a team and dray to haul supplies for the stores from the station. He was kept very busy. In the winter he cut ice blocks from the lake and hauled them to the folk in Saltcoats. They melted the ice for soft water to wash clothes with. The dray business was not without its problems. I can remember the team ran away with a load of apples from the station. They had just finished loading when something scared the horses and away they went full tilt for home. Turning the corner for home, away went the apples, some of the boxes were broken (they were wooden in those days) but they managed to salvage some of the apples. Sometimes, when Mom ran short of homemade bread I would be sent to Andy Murphy's store for four loaves of bread - twenty five cents for four loaves. We went to the Presbyterian Church which is the Masonic Hall now. The Reverend Blue was our minister. Their manse was where Mr. Elmer Inglis lives now. There was even a photo studio then, it belonged to Mr. J. Grebeniak, we had our family picture take there. One Christmas concert stands out for me, I was chosen, one of a group, to take part in a folk dance. Miss Oxner taught us the dance, she was one of the high school teachers, later she went to teach at University College in Saskatoon.Mrs. Scull was my first teacher, Mrs. Duffes was my teacher when we left Saltocoates after the war.Dad and Mom decided to go back to the farm, about 1919 we moved to the Softley farm in the Cut Arm District, Annie and I went to school there. As Jessie and Elsie got older, they went to school there too.Dad passed away on October 23, 1938. Mother stayed on the farm awhile, then stayed with Annie for a while. Later she looked after a lady in Winnepeg then stayed with Elsie, Mrs. Willard Anderson until her death in December of 1957.Doris Thompson married Harry Strachan April 14, 1932.Annie Thompson married Robert Brears October 24, 1933; they had ten children, They live in Clumber District and their names are: Robert Louis, John Edward, Ann Elizabeth, David Milton, Paul William, Stuart August, Margaret Helen, Sylvia Ruth, Phyllis Elsie, Laura Louise. They are all married except Margaret Helen who died May 10, 1976.Jessie Thompson lives with Maimie McNutt in Saltcoats, the look after one another.Elsie Thompson Anderson died August 1967.
General Notes: Wife - Jessie Ann Moar Cromarty
I just remembered who Nathaniel was talking about and it was Grandma Jessie Thompson. I remember Mom saying that the girls were really put in their place. One time Dave and I were wrestling and Mom was horrified, they were not allowed to say anything nasty let alone fight. She, Grandma kind of reminded me of a sergeant major. Grandad of course was a meek mild gentleman. Mom wrote down some of her thoughts and she had said that Doris made her so mad she almost hit her, but of course she wouldn't.[Anne Poole nee Brears]
