General Notes: Wife - Florence Eleanor May Brears

Obituary:FLORENCE BITTNERMrs. Florence Eleanor May (nee Brears) Bittner of Yorkton passed away on November 22, 1996 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, following an 11 month battle with cancer. She was 80 years of age. Florence was born May 9, 1916 on the Brears homestead in the Clumber District near Bredenbury, SK. She was the youngest of five children of Robert and Ruth Brears (nee Leppington). Her early education was at Clumber School. She moved to Yorkton with her parents and attended Burke School and later graduated from grade 12 at the Yorkton Collegiate Institute. She played saxophone in her high school band and belonged to a softball team as well. After high school, she worked in Henry Beck's Dry Goods and Lingerie Store.Florence married August Bittner on April 30, 1941 and their marriage was blessed with two children, Bob an Eleanor. In 1950, the couple moved to their farm on highway 9 south of Yorkton where they started a dairy farm as well as mixed grain farming. Florence loved being outdoors; working on the farm alongside her husband. She grew large and bountiful gardens every year and canned and pickled most of the produce of the garden. Florence and August's home was always open to friends and family, and she soon became known as the best bun, pickle and pumpkin pie maker to her children's friends. Florence and August became Mom and Dad to many of their nieces and nephews and many of their children's friends. They were always there to help when anyone had problems or difficulties. In later years, after retiring, August and Florence spent many happy weekends camping and fishing with friends at many lakes and rivers in the area and they always found room to take some of their grandchildren with them. Florence also spent many hours on her garden tractor, cutting her large lawn and working her gardens. She is predeceased by her parents; her mother and father-in-law; her husband, August; two brothers, ten brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, one niece, and four nephews. She leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life her son, Bob and his wife Georgina of Yorkton; her daughter, Eleanor Spokes of Yorkton; granddaughters, Tracy and Trina Bittner and Deanna Spokes, and grandson, Dion Spokes of Yorkton. She is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Gilbert of Victoria, B.C.; Pearl Lowrey of Vancouver, B.C.; ten sisters-in-law; special friends, Tom and Bev Teare of Thompson, Manitoba; foster daughter, Mary Ellen Hallum of Regina; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews who were very special to her. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 27, 1996 from the First Baptist Church, Yorkton with Pastor Steven Rosluk presiding. The organist, Ruth McPhee, accompanied the church choir and congregation in the singing of the hymns "Beyond The Sunset" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." The special selections "Amazing Grace" and "The 23rd Psalm" were sung by Joleen Cherland. The choir sang "Where The Spirit Of The Lord Is" in recession. Florence was laid to rest in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Eileen Cowan, Edna Elder and Eilane Courschene acting as Honourary Pallbearers. The casketbearers were Edwin Smith, Seig Heuchert, Colleen Ashcroft, Robert Ashcroft, Ken Wolfe and Nelson Ford. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Yorkton.
