Burial Notes: Husband - Joseph Scholey

\b Obituary:\b0 Pontefract & Castleford Express, Saturday, August 26, 1899BealFuneral of Mr J. ScholeyThe internment of Mr. Joseph Scholey, one of the oldest inhabitants of Beal, who died on Wednesday last after a short illness, took place in Kellington churchyard on Monday. The deceased, whose business relations in former years had brought him into contact with a large number of people, was deeply respected for his sterling business qualities and his singularly upright character in his dealings with others. Though he had retired from business for some years and the increasing infirmaties of old age had naturally prevented him from going far from home, the large and representative following at the funeral on Sunday testified to the deep affection and esteem still felt by the friends he made in former days. Almost every house in Beal, Birkin and Kellington was represented at the internment, while friends from many other places assembled to pay their last respects to the deceased gentleman. The funeral cortege reached the churchyard at about 3-30pm, where it was met by the vicar, the Rev. E.B. Binks, the vicar of Kellington, who, with the assistance of the Rev. H.W. Wright, Rector of Birkin, for whom Mr Scholey had acted as churchwarden for many years, conducted the service in a most impressive manner. The coffin was made of polished oak, superbly mounted and having the following simple inscription on it. "Joseph Scholey, born April 21\up5\up5\up5\up5\up5\super st\up0\up0\up0\up0\up0\nosupersub 1817 Died August 16\up5\up5\up5\up5\up5\super th\up0\up0\up0\up0\up0\nosupersub 1899" At the request of the family no flowers were sent but the whole ceremony was, at the same time, imposing and deeply impressive. (P.S.S.)
