General Notes: Husband - George Scholey
George Probert Wortley Scholey was born January 11th 1865. He was baptised on March 12th in the parish of Chapeltown, Sheffield. His parents were George William Scholey, a farmer of High Green, Sheffield, and Ellen Sarah Scholey. In 1890 he was at Chancellor's School in Lincoln. This was the Lincoln theological college. In 1892 he became deacon and 1893 patron or priest. He was curate at St Matthew, Stonehouse in Plymouth 1892-4. In 1893 he was living at 26 Emma Place, East Stonehouse, Plymouth. In 1894 he became rector of East Keal, Lincolnshire and, whilst there he became chaplain to the Earl of Yarborough from 1900-01. He became an unbenefied priest and worked as curate of Compton Gifford from 1901-4. In 1905 he became vicar of Appledore, where he remained until 1921. However, he was also chaplain-in-charge of Lundy Island from 1915 -1921 and temporary chaplain to the forces from 1915-1917. He is remembered in Appledore for refurbishing the church and his name appears on the rood screen.Ill health forced him to resign in 1921 and in 1926 he was residing at 25, Brean Down Avenue, Weston-Super-Mare. His health improved and he returned to service as Rector of Alvington, The Rectory, Fairy Cross, North Devon, from March 1927 -1931, when ill health once more forced him to give his work up. He was married but I have no information about wife or family. He retired to Westwood, Gorse Avenue, Worthing, where he died, aged 71 years, on January 20th or 21st, 1936.(The above biography was kindly provided by Penelope Rowe)
